How can I make sure that I don't underestimate step voltages.

Your profile points should be as close to 1 m as possible, in both x and y directions if you wish to obtain a good
assessment of step voltages. Large spacings lead to underestimation of step voltages: a potential curve as a function of distance away from a conductor typically drops abruptly and then levels off gradually. If the earth potentials are computed at only large spacings, then the linear interpolation which is carried out to estimate the voltage difference (i.e., step voltage) between points 1 m apart causes the abrupt drop to become averaged with a more level part of the curve, resulting in a lower value.
